The MBA Resume: What B-School Recruiters Actually Read

Consulting, finance and FMCG recruiters read MBA resumes differently from tech. Here is the structure they expect and the bullet style that survives a first round.

MBA hiring is unusually format-conventional. Consulting and finance recruiters read a very large number of near-identical resumes in a compressed window, and they have strong expectations about where information sits. Deviating from the convention does not read as creative; it reads as unfamiliar with the process.

The expected structure

  1. Header: name, phone, email, city. One line.
  2. Education, first and prominent. Your B-school, degree, specialisation, graduation year, and academic standing if it is strong. Undergraduate degree below it.
  3. Professional experience, reverse chronological, with dates that leave no unexplained gaps.
  4. Positions of responsibility and leadership — committees, clubs, elected roles.
  5. Additional: certifications, languages, and interests, kept to one line each.

Education sits above experience here, which is the opposite of the convention in most other fields. In campus hiring the degree is the reason you are in the pool at all, so it leads.

Bullets are about impact, not scope

The most common failure on an MBA resume is describing the size of the thing you were near rather than what you changed about it. Managing a large budget is not an accomplishment. Changing an outcome is.

Weak

Part of a team responsible for a portfolio of 12 retail accounts worth several crore in annual revenue.

Strong

Renegotiated payment terms across 12 retail accounts, cutting average collection period from 74 to 51 days and releasing roughly 1.2 crore in working capital.

Two structural things make the second version work. It names a decision you made, and it reports a delta — from something, to something. Recruiters in these functions are trained to look for the delta.

Quantify without inventing

Not every contribution has a rupee figure attached, and pretending otherwise is transparent. Numbers you can usually recover honestly include: people coordinated, time saved, cycle length reduced, error or rework rate, accounts or SKUs handled, and percentage change against a baseline you remember.

If you truly cannot quantify a bullet, make it concrete instead. Naming the specific problem and the specific decision reads far better than attaching a number nobody believes.

Leadership sections are read closely

For consulting in particular, positions of responsibility carry real weight, because the work is client-facing and team-based from the start. Treat these entries with the same discipline as work experience: what you were responsible for, what you decided, and what came of it. "Member, Placement Committee" is a fact, not a bullet.

Length and gaps

  • One page for campus placement, essentially without exception. Two pages only for lateral hiring with substantial pre-MBA experience.
  • Account for every period. An unexplained twelve-month gap becomes the first interview question, and you would rather answer it on your own terms.
  • A break for CAT preparation, family responsibility or health is normal and statable. Silence is what invites suspicion.

ThunderCV includes executive and single-column layouts that follow this section order, so education leads and dates align cleanly down the right margin — the arrangement most campus recruiters are used to scanning.
